Before & After: 921 R Street NW

One of our most impressive renovations is 921 R Street NW located in the heart of Shaw! This single family home with mother-in-law basement suite features 3 bedrooms with 3.5 baths. It also has a finished two car garage that could be utilized as a studio space, office, or an indoor/ outdoor lounge space. The home has a private deck off the the master bedroom, a back patio area, as well as a roof top patio on the finished garage.

Before the renovation, the home had a traditional town house layout with formal living room, formal dining room, kitchen in the back, and small entry vestibule. The entire first floor was separated by walls which made the rooms feel small and made the home very crowded. The second floor had two bedrooms and one bathroom with a small master bedroom deck. The basement was left completely unfinished and the garage was used as mostly storage.

Our goal for the renovation was to create a home that was functional and had a modern home layout that was set up for entertaining. We did this by eliminating walls on the first floor and creating a open floor plan that joined the living, dining and kitchen together. We also added a convenient powder bathroom and floor-to-ceiling windows in the living area to flood the entire first floor with natural lighting. We maximized the space in the basement and the top floor to make sure that every bedroom had a full bath with plenty of closet space.

The garage was the biggest renovation of them all. We wanted to utilize the large existing garage area by finishing half of the basement and creating a flexible space that could serve as a lounge/ office/ guest house. In doing all of these renovations we added plenty of livable exterior space by creating a deck off of the master bedroom, a patio area between the house and garage, adding a rooftop lounge on the garage.

To finish up the renovation we painted the exterior a medium grey with black trim, added a black light and beautiful gold transom numbers. We also landscaped the front to create an inviting area. Click through the galleries below to see the before and after transformation of 921 R Street NW!
